Since its inauguration on May 23, 1984, the Busan Metropolitan Traditional Orchestra has been committed to pass down and progress traditional music, and flourish creative music through a wide range of activities centered on the Ocean Capital Busan. With about 70 professional performers, it has been showcasing superb performances of our music at regular concerts, special concerts, planned performances, and other various performance home and abroad, including Denmark, Turkey, Singapore, India, China, Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, Indonesia, USA, Germany and Australia. Starting with the first conductor, late Lee Eui-kyung, it had the second conductor, Kim Young-dong, the third conductor, late Kim Yong-man, the fourth conductor, Bae Yang-hyun, the fifth and sixth conductor, Park Ho-sung, the seventh conductor, Kim Chul-ho, the eighth conductor, Lee Jung-pil, the artistic director, Kim Jung-soo, the ninth principal conductor, Kim Jong-wook and now it has current artistic director Lee Dong-hoon. Throughout all those composers, it has committed to improve the arts and popularize our music with a passionate and novel repertoire. The Orchestra was selected twice in 2013 and 2015 for the overseas dispatch of cultural and artistic performances of local governments hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2013, the performance to mark the 130th anniversary of the Korea-German diplomatic relationship and the 50th anniversary of the dispatch of miners to Germany, was completed successfully in Düsseldorf and Hamburg, Germany. In 2015, the concert commemorating the 50th anniversary of the normalization of Korea-Japan diplomatic relations drew enthusiastic applause with elegant and refined Korean music at Sapporo Civic Hall in Japan. The Busan Metropolitan Traditional Orchestra promotes to popularize, modernize, and bring Korean music into our daily lives to create high added value of it, enhancing the status of Korean traditional culture at home and abroad.
