    Seoul Metropolitan Ballet presents “Kammerballett,”

capturing the essence of Hans van Manen's style.

Kammerballett is one of the masterpieces of Dutch choreographer Hans van Manen, known as the ‘Mondrian of dance’, and has been staged by leading ballet companies worldwide.

A living legend of modern ballet, Manen transformed the Netherlands from a dance barren land into a global dance hub.

Beginning with Hans van Manen's Kammerballet, the Seoul Metropolitan Ballet will present contemporary ballet works by various international choreographers.

The essence of Hans van Manen's style - sensual and sophisticated colors in costumes and lighting, splendid yet restrained movements, and a sense of rhythm in serious and gentle melodies - can be found in the Seoul Metropolitan Ballet's Kammerballett.

With a special appearance by ballerina Kim Ji-young, who performed the work as a member of the Dutch National Ballet, this performance will raise the expectation.

Boundary-breaking choreographer Cha Jin-yeob sets the stage for “The Stage of the Ancients.”

Cha Jin-yeob, a choreographer who breaks down the boundaries between genres and opens up a new chapter in art with her unrestrained imagination and fearless expression, joins the Seoul Metropolitan Ballet to present her new work, Ritardscendo.

Choosing water as the primordial stage where the dance of life begins, Cha sets the stage in the water on the land of contemporary ballet with the beauty of bodies gliding in the swaying abyss.

For the first time in Asia, Hans van Manen's Kammerballett, which established the Netherlands as a central hub in the global dance scene, will be presented.

The Kammerballett premiered in 1995, featuring dancers Sol Leon and Paul Lightfoot.

Since then, the work has been revived by various ballet companies across continental Europe, including the Rhein Opera Ballet, Mainz Ballet, and Stuttgart Ballet in Germany, as well as the National Ballet of Portugal, Zurich Ballet in Switzerland, and La Scala Theater Ballet in Italy.

It is a work in which the language of movement itself is expressed in a distinct way, as indicated by the use of “Kammerballett” (meaning “chamber” in English)' as the title. This title emphasizes the intimate and experimental nature of the performance, setting it apart from large-scale classical ballets.

“Eternal Prima Ballerina” Kim Ji-young returns to the stage

Ballerina Kim Ji-young will perform in Kammerballett.

It will be her first performance in Korea in 17 years, since she performed with the Dutch National Ballet in 2007. Hans van Manen has praised Kim as one of the dancers who fully understands his style, making her appearance all the more anticipated and significant. As she is accustomed to be labeled with titles such as the first and the youngest, her return to the Kammerballett will be more natural and refreshing at the same time.

The extraordinary way Hans van Manen uses music, combined with pianist Kim  Tae-hyung's balanced and logical interpretation.

Kammerballett features piano music by composers spanning 250 years of musical history and eras, from Domenico Scarlatti, Kara Karayev to John Cage.

Hans van Manen's innate musicality is evident in how he uses the rhythms in the music to guide his movements.

In the Korean premiere, pianist Kim Tae-hyung recorded for the Seoul Metropolitan Ballet's Kammerballet. His balanced and logical interpretation of the piano melodies flows seamlessly over the top of each dancer's individualized and emotional movements, and the sensuous solos in the second half of the performance.

    Hans van Manen

A living legend of modern dance. Choreographer Hans van Manen began his career as a dancer, presenting his first choreography in 1955. Since then, he has alternately served as resident choreographer for the Netherlands' two premier dance companies, NDT and Dutch National Ballet. His dedication and monumental contributions to the cultural arts have earned him numerous awards, including Europe's highest honor, the Erasmus Prize, and the Benois de la Danse Lifetime Achievement Award.

Van Manen's emphasis on relationship between people, rooted in simplicity and musicality, has earned him the nickname “Mondrian of Dance.” More than 150 of his works, including those for broadcast media, are performed today by over 90 dance companies worldwide.

New Work by Boundary-Breaking Choreographer Cha Jin-yeob

    Ritardscendo

Choreographer Cha Jin-yeob, known for creating a new language of the body through a multifaceted approach and interpretation of dance, has been focusing on the circularity of the body in her recent works, such as Round Body: Round 1, 2.

Focusing on movement itself, she has been exploring dance without boundaries, integrating it with various fields such as installation art, video, and music.

She has choreographed major events in Korea and internationally, including the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, and served as the artistic director for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2021 Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism.

She has presented works which transcend the boundaries of genre and form and approach the essence and nature of things in a new artistic language.

The collaboration between choreographer Cha Jin-yeob, known for breaking the boundaries of genres with her inexhaustible imagination and undaunted expression, and the Seoul Metropolitan Ballet, creates a fresh exploration of the body through the medium of ballet.

This new work, “Ritardscendo,” which portrays a “stage in water” representing the beginning of life and time, will invite you to confront the essence of movement as expressed by the body – both familiar and new.

The ritardscendo of a body gliding in an abyss.

Ritardscendo is a compound word coined by the choreographer to capture the aesthetic meaning and value of slowness. It combines “ritard-” from “ritardando” (a gradual slowing of tempo) with “-scendo” from “decrescendo” (a gradual decrease), and it is the primal stage where the dance of life begins in what is described as “water”.

In water, our body's heart rate naturally slows down. Submerging into the abyss may evoke a sense of nostalgia for the unknown that lies deep within.

Having a swim in ever-changing, flowing water is essential for survival and thriving. It reflects how living creatures adapt to their environment in many forms and ways, embracing and coexisting with change.

The body is living and dancing through balancing and sailing on the surface of the sea, in a constant state of flux, harmonizing with the order of nature.

The body is immersed in a moment of ritardecendo, like gliding deep into the water, away from the frenetic pace and stimulation of modern society. It represents the aspiration for infinite freedom by liberating our bodies from transient stimuli. It is an attempt to explore these existential values while simultaneously uncovering the natural beauty of the body.

    Choreographer Cha Jin-Yeob

Choreographer Cha Jin-yeob earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Korea National University of Arts and her Master of Fine Arts from London Contemporary Dance School in the UK. She has also worked as a dancer with Hofesh Shechter in the UK and Galili Dance in the Netherlands.

In 2012, she founded the creative art group “Collective A,” where she serves as the artistic director. She has been developing choreographic works that rise above the concepts of traditional dance language and collaborating with artists from various fields.

She is forging her own new artistic language by transcending traditional boundaries of genre and form, including serving as the artistic director for the opening and closing ceremonies of the  2021 Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism, as well as choreographer for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
